Maternity Care at Bathurst Island

I am a Tiwi. I have lived on Bathurst Island all my life. I went to St Therese School Nguiu and finished in Grade 7 in 1968. For a short time after that I worked in the sewing factory, and then the sisters chose me to be a health worker. I spent six months doing a nursing assistant's course at Darwin Hospital, then I went back to Bathurst Island to work in the health centre. I have been there since then. The different sisters that have been in the hospital gave lessons to us. Last year I finished the post basic skills course and was promoted to a Grade 3 health worker. This means that we take the responsibility for our work, supervise the junior health workers and can manage the day-to-day running of the health centre, and health programs in the community.
