Abstract

Biofuels produced from biomass has the potential to become a vital part of the aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the UK. The environmental sustainability of biofuels is, however debated. Studies conducted on bioethanol, pellets and untreated material from agricultural residues have shown biofuels to have a reduced environmental impact compared to fossil fuels but the methodology chosen can lead to differences in results. The choice of functional unit and allocation procedure is of special importance. It becomes apparent that one area of research regarding the environmental sustainability that needs to be explored is the use of pellets and straw as an energy source. One example is Oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) straw pellets for combustion to generate heat and/or power. The research project on this area under progress is described in the paper.
