Abstract
During the years 1990 to 1994 a study of traffic safety at roundabouts has been performed in Denmark. It was made in connection with a study of 82 roundabouts which has been used as a sort of basis for the design of future roundabouts in Denmark. Roundabouts in Denmark are considered one of the safest types of nodes in the road network. They also have the advantage of providing a flexible way of handling the traffic flows. The way that motor vehicles merge when moving in and out of a roundabout seems to cause less serious collisions than is observed at give-way intersections. Also, the mean speed in roundabouts is relatively low and this also means fewer serious accidents. the expected number of accidents in the intersections in the afterperiod is found by correcting for the development in the number of accidents and for the changes in length of period - before and after.
