Abstract

This chapter draws particularly on an overview of forest conservation in Europe, the 'Protected Forest Areas in Europe' project and data available online for the European COST E27 project 'Protected forest areas in Europe - analysis and harmonization (PROFOR)'. A second strand looks at the state of the habitats and species identified under the European Union (EU) 1992 Habitats and Species Directive, whose condition is reported on every 6 years.
