Abstract

In 1986 a road needs study was undertaken on the local roads in the urban areas of Western Australia using the study method developed in the shire of swan in 1982-84. Various modifications to the original analysis are discussed, particularly relating to cracking of bituminous concrete surfaces and the timing of resurfacing. The results of the 1986 study are presented and analysed. Evidence of an existing backlog of work is presented. The level of expenditure required to maintain the existing road system over the next 15 years is determined and compared with current levels of expenditure (a).
