Abstract

The status of the notion of constituency in the explication of the notion of syntax has been analyzed in this article. The position of the phrase structure grammar, according to which constituency is autonomous aspect of the syntax has been discussed; also the position of the dependency grammar, according to which the notion of constituency could be fully reduced to grammatical functions and eliminated, has been discussed. Both these positions have been evaluated as inadequate. Is being argued that although the notion of constituency is based on the notion of grammatical categories, it cannot be fully reduced and eliminated. The syntax diagrams used in contemporary theoretical linguistics are not compatible with the latter treatment of constituency and therefore should be considered inadequate means for visualizing syntax; the only compatible syntax diagramming system is that of Reed-Kellogg. Keywords: theoretical linguistics, syntax, constituency, grammatical functions, syntax diagrams, Reed-Kellogg diagrams. DOI:  http://dx.doi.org/10.15823/zz.2014.024
