THE FROST-SUSCEPTIBILITY CRITERIA NOW IN USE CAN BE DIVIDED INTO 3 GROUPS: PARTICLE SIZE, FROST HEAVE RATE, AND PHASE INTERFACE. IN ORDER TO DETERMINE FROST SUSCEPTIBILITY, THE GRADATION CURVE OF GRAIN SIZES IS PLOTTED AND THEN COMPARED WITH THE CONTENT OF THE FINES AGAINST CERTAIN DEFINED VALUES REPRESENTING FROST DAMAGES. THE BEARING CAPACITY OF SOIL IS LOWER AFTER A THAW. SINCE FROST HEAVE RATE OFTEN SERVES AS A MEANS OF CHECKING THE INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS CONDITIONS SUCH AS TEMPERATURE, IT IS ALSO USEFUL FOR CHECKING THE INFLUENCE OF ADDITIVES IN STABILIZED SOILS. SMALL SCALE MODELS THAT SIMULATE INSITU CONDITIONS ARE DISCUSSED. THE WATER-ICE AND WATER-AIR INTERFACE ARE CONSIDERED IN CONNECTION WITH THE PORE SIZE.
