THE DETERMINATION OF ISOTOPIC RADIUM

Abstract

An analytical procedure is presented for the rapid determination of the three naturally-occurring alpha emitting radium isotopes. Total radium is precipitated with barium carrier, dissolved, and purified by solvent extraction. The concentrations of each of the radium isotopes are determined by selective extraction of the lead and bismuth daughters at suitable times. Ra/sup 223/ is determined by counting 36-min. Pb-Bi/sup 211/ Ra/sup 224/ by counting 1-hr Bi/ sup 21/ /sup 2/ and Ra/sup 226/ by counting 20-min. Bi-Po/sup 214/. Very low- level determinations are possible. (auth)
