Abstract
A large tree-felling machine has been proposed for use in the Mount Gambier region of South Australia where, at present, the clear felling of Radiata pines involves serious stem shatter. The machine would minimize this shatter by lowering the trees to the ground in a controlled manner. Work on the concept is described, and it is concluded that mechanical lowering of large trees is feasible.
