Management of pod borers in pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.) through bio and novel insecticides

Abstract

The efficacy of HaNPV and novel insectsides against control of pod borers (Helicoverpa armigera and Melanagromyza obtusa) at different stages of pigeonpea crop were assessed at farmer's fields of Banda and Hamirpur districts under DAC funded “Acceleration of Pulse Production Programme (A3P). The effect of HaNPV indicates that spraying at flower initiation stage (Ist fortnight of January) was found very effective in reduction of larval population of pod borer in pigeonpea. Only 9.42 per cent pod damage and highest yield (12.00q/ha) was recorded in Kamasin unit of Banda district, Kurara (8.77 per cent pod damage and yield 10.30 q/ha) and Maudaha (8.18 per cent pod damage and yield 10.00 q/ha). For testing of novel insecticides, conventional insecticides and bio-pesticides against pod borers of pigeonpea, the application of HaNPV @ 250 LE/ha (at flowering) + Emamectin benzoate 5 SG @ 200g/ha (at poding) was found most effective in all three units with highest larval reduction 90.00 per cent and lowest 5.16 per cent pod infestation in Kamasin, 92.31 per cent larval reduction and 4.25 per cent pod infestation in Kurara and 83.33 per cent larval reduction and 5.00 per cent pod infestation in Maudaha unit but for pod fly, Melanangromyza obtusa monocrotophos, 36 SL @ 1.0 liter/ha was superiority with lowest grain infestation 8.68 per cent (Kamasin) 6.70 per cent (Kurara) 7.00 per cent (Maudaha)
