The Pascal language, as defined by the ISO Third Draft Proposal or Jensen and Wirth (in the Pascal User Manual and Report (Second Edition) ), does not facilitate the manipulation of character strings. Standard Pascal defines a string type to be simply a fixed-length array of characters. This definition is, of course, adequate from a theoretic point of view, but leads to several problems for the Pascal programmer from a practical viewpoint.
