Abstract

A survey was undertaken to study the dry matter production, nutrient uptake and yield of maize grown in soils belonging to three different orders (Alfisols, Inceptisols and Vertisols) in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. Maize grown in Vertisols recorded the maximum mean uptake of N, P and K as compared to Maize grown in Alfisols and Inceptisols. Maize grown in Alfisols exhibited maximum mean uptake of Ca and S as compared to maize grown in Inceptisols and Vertisols whereas maize grown in Inceptisols showed maximum mean uptake of Mg. Further, maximum uptake of Fe, Zn, Mn and B were registered in maize crop grown in Vertisols while maximum uptake of Cu was registered in maize crop grown in Inceptisols. There is no much variation in dry matter production of maize grown in Alfisols, Inceptisols and Vertisols. The highest cob yield was observed in maize crop grown in Vertisols.
