Abstract
It is shown that the vector field propagators may be taken to be transverse only in the theories where the longitudinal part of the propagators is nonessential (electrodynamics, the Yang-Mills theory for the massless vector fields, the theory of the massive neutral vector field). The choice of the propagators in the transverse form is forbidden in the local theories of massive charged vector fields since this leads to a violation of unitarity or causality principles. (auth)
