Abstract
We studied the susceptibilities of Candida isolates from Taiwan to antifungal agents in a project named Taiwan Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance of Yeasts (TSARY). From April 15 to June 15, 1999, a total of 660 yeast isolates were collected from 22 hospitals. Of these, 632 Candida isolates were tested for their sensitivities to amphotericin B and fluconazole. Only 3 of the 632, one each of C. famata, C. krusei, and C. tropicals, were resistant to amphotericin B. A total of 8.4% (53 isolates) were resistant to fluconazole, including: 4% (9/237) of C. albicans, 8% (13/156) of C. glabrata, 15% (24/163) of C. tropicalis, and 70% (7/10) of C. krusei. Those from the medical centers (the general hospitals with more than 1,000 beds) had a higher resistance rate to fluconazole than those from the non-medical center hospitals (11.4% vs. 6.6%). Isolates from different sites showed some variation in the fluconazole resistance rate. All isolates from blood, with exceptions of four C. tropicalis and one C. krusei strains were sensitive to fluconazole. The fluconazole resistance rate of non-albicans Candida was significantly higher than that of the C. albicans [44/395 (11.2%) vs. 9/237 (3/8%), p=0.002]. C. tropicalis was the most frequently isolated of the non-albicans Candida and had the highest fluconazole resistance rate (15%).
