Abstract

In a pilot study 132 women took Ovostat (1 mg lynestrenol and .1 mg mestranol 22 tablets) for a total of 1170 cycles without any pregnancies. The women were 16-49 years old (mean 26) and all but 6 took Ovostat for contraception. Withdrawal bleeding began 2-4 days after the last pill in 99% of cycles; there were 6 amenorrheic cycles and 2 with breakthrough bleeding. The duration of bleeding averaged 3.6 days and was 3-5 days in 89%. Flow was less than usual in 15.8% and more so in 2.9%. Other side effects included breast pain (14.4% in Cycles 1-3 .3% afterward) nausea (5.2 and 4.9%) nervousness (2.4 and 3.0%) and loss of libido (4.7 and 1.4%). Complaints that were relieved included: varicosities depression nausea headaches nervousness and depressed libido. 23.4% gained .5 kg or more in the first 3 cycles. 12 women discontinued Ovostat for various reasons.
