Abstract

The evolution of geotechnical engineering and construction has been shaped by the interaction between changes in demand, advances in science, and the development of new materials and sources of power. These changes, driven by broader historical events, led to the creation of rational methods of design and a new branch of civil engineering. This paper presents a series of timelines that summarize the development of exploration methods, pile driving, caissons and drilled shafts, excavation and lateral support.
