Abstract
Numerical modelling of the transport and dispersion of effluent plumes from deep water outfalls located some 3 kilometres offshore of Sydney is currently being undertaken. Development of the modelling capability is continuing so as to provide a suite of models which estimate: the behaviour of the jets/plumes issuing from and in the vicinity of the outfall diffusers the flow of the coastal waters; the transport and dispersion of the neutrally buoyant effluent field; and, the behaviour of floatable and settleable effluent materials. The suite has been integrated in such a way that as each component of the model suite is upgraded, the overall assessment capability is improved. The integrated suite is also used to provide the client with near real-time assessment of plume behaviour. Progress to date is reviewed and future directions for model development are discussed.
