Abstract

A review is given of the major ideas and contributions in the development of the concepts of metamaterials and transform optics. The application of these concepts to the field of electromagnetic cloaking (the hiding of an object from detection by electromagnetic waves) is then discussed. The ideas will be presented at a level suitable for postgraduate students, or physicists not working in this area.
