Abstract

Bovine babesiosis is a disease transmitted by hard ticks. It is caused by protozoan parasites Babesia bovis, which infect the red blood cells. Babesia bovis impose a global risk and severe constraints to livestock health and economic development. The modern methods of detection, therapy and control are presented in the review. The diagnosis of bovine babesiosis is an important tool to control and prevent the dissemination of the disease. Identification of the parasite in mammalian can be used for direct diagnosis purposes. During the acute stage of the disease the number of parasites inside the erythrocytes increases in such a way that they can be detected microscopically. However, in chronically infected animals where a subclinical form of the disease occurs, this method is useless and other, more sophisticated methods (e.g. CFT, IHAT, ELISA and Molecular Methods) should be employed. Nowadays diminazene aceturate and imidocarb are widely employed in veterinary medicine for therapy of bovine babesiosis. The main way of prevention is tick control. Killed and live vaccines produced from local strains were also improved.
