Abstract
Field experiments with butachlor (JV-(butoxymethly)-2-chloro- 2′, 6′-diethyl aceta-nilide) and propanil (3′, 4′-dichloropropionanilide) applied alone or in sequence were conducted during rainy (Kharif) season of 1979 and 1980 to find out their afficacy in controlling weeds in transplanted rice. It was found that all the concentrations of butachlor and propanil alone or in (2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 kg/ha) sequence reduced dry matter of weeds considerably. The grain yield was increased by as much as 1301 kg/ha over unweeded control. It was also noted that the preemergence application of butachlor followed by postemergence application of propanil each at 1.0 kg/ha was more effective and economical than application of either herbicide alone even at higher rates.
