Abstract

Soil moisture variability information is crucial to understand land surface - atmosphere interaction for water resources management, climate change, and land slides. Soil moisture measurements were collected at different depths using dielectric probes during the field experiment near Ames, IA. Typically soil moisture variability was controlled by many physical components such as vegetation, soil type, topography, and precipitation. In this study, we conducted statistical analyses and temporal analyses to identify general soil moisture characteristics. Through this type of study, we may provide better understanding of the soil moisture variability in temporal and spatial terms resulting in improvements of the land surface processes.
