The Characteristic of Political Culture in the First Republic of Korea

Abstract

The objective of this study is to figure out the Characteristic of political culture during the period of the First Republic of Korea. In this period of time, premodern awareness and culture still remained extensively. The political culture of the First Republic had negative effect on politics of Korea, combined external factors like inheritance of colonial and anticommunist rule with internal factors by ruling system of authoritarianism and confucian tradition. However as political awareness was changed gradually, many citizens criticized system of authoritarianism with awareness of resistance and equality, which leads to promotion of political culture by introduction of democracy and competitive political party system.BR The political development and democratization of the nation is not decided by political system but by maturity of political culture. To operate new political system smoothly within the society, the political culture suitable for the system is required. Considering the settlement of democratic politics is significant, the establishing course of political system is confronted by the necessity of forming suitable political culture, which lead to the conclusion that the political development is based on the formation of right political culture.
