Abstract

This chapter reviews the scientific literature of feed intake and efficiency in dairy and beef cattle, identifies potential gains and pitfalls from selection on either trait and discusses alternative options to achieve these gains as well as future gaps in knowledge. Focus is given on genetics of feed intake and efficiency, breeding programmes for feed intake and efficiency and genomics of feed intake and efficiency.
