Abstract
Asynchronous transfer mode has been selected by CCITT as the universal bearer for broadband ISDN services. The author briefly reviews the characteristics of ATM concentrating on the aspects which will be apparent to potential users of B-ISDN. The European Commission RACE programme focuses research and development on integrated broadband communications which includes terminal systems and applications as well as B-ISDN network capabilities. The application pilots within RACE are outlined and conclusions drawn on the relevance of ATM.
