Abstract
Standards are an integral part of the development, selection, and evaluation of the performance of protective clothing. If a clothing system fails to protect the wearer from potential hazards in the environment, human injury or death may occur. There are opportunities for apparel designers and textile scientists to participate in national and international standards development activities. This article discusses types of standards, standards-writing organizations, and the process of developing standards for protective clothing and materials.
