Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic and analgesic activity of aqueous extract of fruits of Tamarindus indica Linn (TI) in rat models. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Analgesic activity with central mechanism of action of aqueous extract of ripe fruits of TI (300, 600, 1200 mg/kg) was investigated in hot-plate and tail-flick methods in rats. Acute anti-inflammatory activity of TI was studied in rats by carrageenan induced paw edema. Cotton pellet induced granuloma in rats was used to study the effect of TI on chronic inflammation. Yeast induced pyrexia model of rats was used to evaluate anti pyretic activity of TI. RESULTS: Aqueous extract of TI revealed significant anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic activity. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the aqueous extract of fruits of TI possess analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activity.
