Abstract
A METHOD IS OUTLINED FOR DETERMINING THE CONSOLIDATION OF SATURATED SOIL BY MEANS OF SAND PILES, WHEN THE PERMEABILITY OF THE SOIL CHANGES GRADUALLY DURING COMPACTION UNDER CONSTANT LOADING. A FORMULA IS GIVEN TO DETERMINE THE COEFFICIENT OF SEEPAGE, WHICH DEPENDS ON THE MODIFICATION IN VOIDS RATIO DURING CONSOLIDATION. THE RELATION BETWEEN THE COEFFICIENT OF SEEPAGE AND THE VARIATION IN VOIDS RATIO IS A LOGARITHMIC FUNCTION. RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF THE CALCULATION OF EXAMPLES OF ONE- AND THREE-DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION WITH VARIATIONS IN PERMEABILITY. THIS EFFECT IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT FOR HIGHLY COMPRESSIBLE SATURATED SOIL. /TRRL/
