Abstract

Prevalence study of viral diseases: bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), parainfluenza-3 (PI3) and bovine respiratory syncytial (BRS) was conducted in dairy cattle during 1995. Total of 2,070 bulk milk tank samples wre collected from 53 milk collecting centers in 31 provinces. They were tested for the presence of specific antibodies against BVD, IBR, PI-3 and BRS using ELISA test kit (Svanovir, Swenden). There are widely spread of BVD, IBR, PI3 and BRS viruses among dairy herds in Thailand. Only 7.3 percent of dairy farms do not have antibodies to the viruses studied. The herd prevalence of BVD, IBR, PI3 and BRS are 37.3, 23.3, 86.3 and 71.6 percent respectively. Seventy three percent of dairy farms have antibodies against more than 2 viruses. Since there is no current prevention program for these viral diseases in Thai dairy cattle, probably due to lack of epidemiological data. Further study on vaccination against these viral diseases should be established in order to evaluate the economical impact of vaccination program on reducing respiratory and reproductive problems in Thai dairy cattle.
