Abstract
Five representative pedons from citrus growing belts of hill districts of Assam, developed on tertiary sedimentary deposits over Archaean gneisses, under sub-tropical hyperthermic and thermic climate representing varying topographic positions were investigated for characterizing and classifying the soils. The soils are very deep, well structured and exhibit varying stages (moderate to well developed) of development with weakly developed argillic horizons. The texture varies from sandy clay loam/clay loam to silty clay in surface horizons to clay loam and clay in the sub-surface. The pedons have been classified as Paleustalf, Hapludult, Paleudult and Haplohumult.
