Abstract
Historical trends in urbanization in China are reviewed, and the causes of urbanization are examined. The characteristics of contemporary urbanization in China are then discussed, including the slow pace of urbanization, regional imbalances, urban demographic structures, seasonal migration, and the instability of urbanization.
