From Catechisms to Texts: Engaging Students in Religious Education in Australian Catholic Primary Schools

Abstract

In the contemporary world of education the engagement of students is seen as a vital aspect of the educative process. This has particularly been the case in mathematics and literacy in Australian schools. Student engagement is crucial in Religious Education (RE) too. This paper outlines some of the major developments in pedagogy and curriculum in RE in Australian Catholic primary schools from the 1800s to the present time. Central to this overview will be an examination of the extent to which each of these major approaches has been able to engage students in RE; such will inform current and future RE practice.
