Abstract

This article briefly summarizes the research that took place in the 1970s on rail noise under the Urban Mass Transportation Administration's Rail Noise and Abatement Program, culminating in the publication of the Handbook of Urban Rail Noise and Vibration Control in 1982. This engineering handbook was adopted by transit operators and consultants, and has gained use worldwide.
