Abstract

This paper reports the findings of a study using ALEKS, a web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system, in an after-school program for sixth grade students. Findings indicate that the significant gap between African American and Caucasian students’ base knowledge in mathematics present in their scores on a 5 grade standardized test was decreased after one school year of using the program. The two groups’ scores on the 6 grade version of the same standardized test were no longer significantly different. Students in a control condition, who only received teacher-led instruction, did not show this change.
