STRENGTH AND CONSOLIDATION BEHAVIOR OF LIME TREATED RED EARTH SOIL

Abstract

Soils are generally of two types-expansive soils such as Black Cotton Soil (BCS) and non expansive soils like Red Earth Soil (RES). This paper describes the strength and consolidation behavior of Red Earth Soil treated with lime. It is found from compaction and unconfined compressive strength test that Red Earth Soil with 3% lime is considered as optimum. On the basis of unconfined strength test it was found that addition of optimum lime to RES increases strength by 5 times when compared with soil alone at 30 days curing. Addition of 3% lime to RES reduces the final voids ratio by 4% and coefficient of compressibility by 39% when compared with soil alone.
