Abstract
The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from the flowers and leaves of Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat. were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Thirteen and twenty-one components representing 97.5% and 93.7% of the flower and leaf oil contents were identified respectively. The major constituents of flower oil were cischrysantheny acetate (21.6%), octadecanoic acid (19.5%) and borneol (15.5%). However, the leaf oil was characterized by borneol (20.5%), 1,8-cineole (15.2%), trans--bergamotene (14.0%), camphor (10.6%) and α-pinene (9.3%). This is the first report on the chemical composition of essential oils of Chrysanthemum morifolium from Nigeria.
