Abstract

4 Abstract: The studies on the essential oil of Cuminum cyminum L. have been carried out. The essential oil of Cuminum cyminum L. was obtained from mature seeds, extracted through hydro distillation. The percentage yield of Cuminum cyminum L. was found to be 2.8%. Physical characteristics were recorded according to standard procedures. Chemical composition of essential oil of Cuminum cyminum L. was analyzed by Gas-liquid chromatography using co-injection technique. Compounds found in the oil were α-pinene 0.9805%, β-pinene 16.2876%, Limonene 0.2307%, α-terpinene 5.6551%, ρ-cymene 15.5464%, Dipentene 0.2102%, 1,8-cineol 2.2421%, cumin aldehyde 25.8749%, cuminyl alcohol 30.023%, perillaldehyde 0.6286% and α-terpineol 0.1929% and 2.1283% remain unidentified. The activity was found against four G (+) and two G (-) test organisms. All these values were indicative as bactericidal and not as bacteriostatic.
