Abstract
Summary Dose-response curveswereobtained withsubcutaneous histamine acidphosphate (HAP)intwenty-two subjects, intravenous HAP infifteen subjects, subcutaneouspentagastrin infourteen subjects andintravenous pentagastrin intwelve subjects inorder todetermine the mnmaldoses ofthese stimuli formaximal pepsin secretion. Theminimal dosesformaximal pepsin secretion were2-8mg HAP on SHT,1-2mg/hrHAP onIHT, 300wgpentagastrin on SPTand100,ug/hr pentagastrin onIPT. FROMdose-response curves, theminimal dosesfor maximal acidsecretion were reported forsubcutaneous(Kay,1953) orintravenous (Lawrie, Smith& Forrest, 1964) histamine acidphosphate (HAP)and subcutaneous (Makhlouf, McManus& Card,1966) orintravenous (Konturek & Lankosz, 1967) pentagastrin (ICI50123). However, similar dose-response curvestodetermine theminimal doseofa stimulus formaximalpepsin secretion arenotreported. In various studies, thedoses ofdifferent stimuli which hadcaused a maximal acidsecretion were administered tostimulate maximal pepsin secretion, on the assumption thatparietal andchief cells havesome definite relationship bothinhealth anddisease inall individuals. Theobject ofthisstudy was toperform doseresponsecurveswithdifferent stimuli with aviewto determine theminimaldosesformaximalpepsin secretion.
