Abstract
The Chagos Archipelago consists of numerous islands and coral reefs lying between 4”44 and 7”41 latitude South, and 70’47 and 72”47 longitude East, an area of roughly 177 by 120 miles in extent. The islands, reefs and banks are of atoll formation. Diego Garcia, Peros Banhos and Salomon, the main atolls, have been inhabited since the latter part of the 18th century. Other islands, e.g. . Egmont or Six Island, Eagle Island, Three Brothers and Danger Island, were worked as coconut plantations at one time but were abandoned later. Nelson Island, the remaining atoll, seems never to have been exploited.
