Abstract
Fungi species from Brazilian savannah soi l (cerrado) were screened for cellulase activity. Penicillium citrinum (CCIBt #14 88) was selected by its superior endoglucanase (CMCase) activity. Its activity over cellulose and hemicellulose was established at a range of growth time, temperature and pH. Maximal CMCase activity (7958 VU ml -1 ) was produced after 6 days between 40 and 50 o C, vanishing at 60 o C. While P. citrinum 1488 growth and glucose production was hig her at low pH, CMCase activity was kept rather stable between pH 3 and 8. Crude extrac t assayed for xyloglucanase and galactomannanase activities presented maximal point s of 460 and 1233 VU ml -1 , respectively. About 90 % of CMCase activity was retained after cr ude extract storage for 150 days at 5o C. The results suggest P. citrinum #1488 has potential to produce enzymes for saccharification of lignocellulose as well as other industrial appli cations.
