Experimental study on the splash/deposition limit in drop impact onto solid surfaces

Abstract

An experimental study of drop impact onto a smooth, dry glass surface is presented. The splash-deposition limit is investigated over a range of Reynolds numbers between 300 and 20 000 and Weber numbers up to 1500. Correlations for the splashing threshold are proposed and compared with those proposed by other authors. Ranges of parameters for which an increase of the viscosity of the working liquid may either promote or inhibit splashing are investigated. The influence of the drop shape on the outcome of the impact is also analyzed.
