Abstract

SUMMARY Thermal comfort and indoor air quality affect learning conditions in schools and therefore a good indoor climate is essential for school buildings. In the majority of cases fresh air in classrooms is supplied by natural ventilation only. But natural ventilation is not adequate to provide good indoor air quality because it is incapable of providing thermal comfort under any ambient conditions. This paper presents a hybrid system that combines an automated natural and mechanical ventilation strategy designed as a retrofit solution for school buildings.
