Abstract
Transcription factors (TFs) play crucial roles inalmost all biological processes. Structurally, TFs areusually classified by their DNA-binding domains:basic region/leucine zipper (bZIP) TFs have a basicregion that binds DNAand a leucine zipperdimerization motif (Box 1). Proteins with bZIPdomains are present in all eukaryotes analysed todate. Some, such as Jun/Fos or CREB, have beenstudied extensively in animals and serve as modelsfor understanding TF–DNAinteractions, ternarycomplex formation and TF post-translationalmodifications (Box 1).
