Abstract

SUMMARY AIM: The aim of the present study is to evaluate antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of toluene, chloroform, ethyl acetate (both residue and liquid extract) and aqueous extracts of Eremurus spectabilis young leaves and to determine their relationship with the phenolic composition. METHODS: The antioxidant capacities of the extracts were evaluated with DPPH radical-scavenging activity assay, including total phenolic content. The antimicrobial activities of the extracts were determined by the microbroth dilutions technique against six bacteria and Candida albicans. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were defined. RESULTS: Ethyl acetate extract (residue) of E. spectabilis showed the highest total phenolic content (77±4.34 mg GAE/g extract) and the strongest antioxidant activity (EC 50 = 0.07±0.03 mg/mL). Chloroform (MIC: 312µg/mL), ethyl acetate extract (residue) (MIC: 625 µg/mL) showed antifungal and antibacterial effect on Candida albicans and Klebsiella pneumoniae , respectively. Aqueous extract showed both antifungal (MIC: 312 µg/mL) and antibacterial (MIC: 625 µg/mL) effect on Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus , respectively. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that E. spectabilis young leaves have beneficial effects on DPPH radical-scavenging ability and may
