Abstract
A useful programming language is a tool intended to facilitate programming and to alleviate either problems typical for present day programming practice or problems which can be expected to arise as programming is extended to new areas. Language design must therefore be based on some overall view of programming as an activity. I should like to suggest that three main subareas of programming deserve to be distinguished:
