Abstract

Abstract Three problems are discussed in this paper in relation to subsidence: the present Situation, the geological environment models relating to the ground subsidence in certain cities of China, and the relationships between the ground subsidence and the Quaternary geological environment. It is pointed out that the layers which consolidate giving rise to ground subsidence are controlled by the type and the character and the age of the Quaternary deposit. The differences in the ground subsidence in Chinese cities depends on the Quaternary geological environment. It is pointed out, also, that neotectonic activity has some influence on the ground subsidence in certain areas. Therefore, research into the Quaternary geological environment is important in solving ground subsidence problems.
