Abstract
The author compares the technical aspects of the European data transmission systems currently available and discusses the possible applications and services which can be supported. The use of modems, acoustic or direct, and digital data services is considered for each bearer service. The objective is to give technical and realistic summaries of radio communication systems within Europe, and the present status of these systems. Particular attention is given to the cellular mobile system (especially the Global System for Mobile Communications, or GSM) and to packet radio.>
