Summary In dark grown aseptic seedling cultures of Zamia floridana DC. amyloplasts with many tightly packed starch grains developed in root cortical cells. In similar cultures exposed to 12 h photoperiods of 5 klx, plastids with characteristics of chromoplasts, chloroplasts and amyloplasts were formed. Light appeared to alter the pathway of plastid development and led to the formation of chloro‐chromo‐amyloplasts in these roots.
