Abstract

Abstract The examination of a uniformly‐sloping tropopause surface during the eastward progression of a jet‐stream maximum reveals that the observed perturbation of the tropopause can be interpreted in terms of the vertical branch of a direct circulation occurring above a jet stream in the entrance region. Indirect evidence is also obtained for the existence of a corresponding direct circulation below the jet stream.
