Breeding of Medium Size Cymbidium ‘Pretty Face’ with White Flower Color and Red Lip

Abstract

A new Cymbidium cultivar, ‘Pretty Face’ was released by a Cymbidium Breeding Program of NHRI in 2003. This hybrid came from the progenies crossed between Cymbidium ‘Yakoto’ and ‘Marian Simplicity’ in 1994. Finally 57 seedlings were obtained after planting and acclimatization in a greenhouse. In 1999, one line was selected by their performance such as flower color, leaf shape, flower stalk, and vigorous growth, and named ‘Wongyo F1-3’. The line code 9421903V2 had uniformity and excellent characteristics. After a second characteristics test the selected line was named ‘Pretty Face’. Predominant flower color of this hybrid is white (WN 155C) with red lip. ‘Pretty Face’ has many flowers (14.7) per flower stalk and small flower size of 7.3 cm in diameter. Petals and sepals seemed some incurved. The plant size is medium and attitude of peduncle is semi-erect. Bloom starts from October under optimal culture condition. High temperature (higher than 30℃) and low light intensity should be avoided for appropriate growth.
