P2‐103: Korean version of Mini‐Mental State Examination and Clinical Dementia Rating Scale Sum of Boxes scores in staging the dementia

Abstract

Korean version of Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE), Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) and CDR Sum of Boxes (CDR-SOB) have been widely used for dementia screening and staging. Several studies recently reported CDR-SOB score had advantage in tracking changes in dementia severity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate which, K-MMSE or CDR-SOB, is better correlated with the individual neuropsychological tests. This is a cross-sectional study based on CREDOS database, which is a web-based, nationwide dementia cohort that have been investigated since May 2005 in South Korea. Besides K-MMSE and CDR-SOB, brain MRI and full neuropsychological battery were tested in total of 8,093 subjects. In those of them, 3,160 persons without significant white mater hyperintensities (WMH) are categorized to normal, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), mild to moderate Alzheimer disease (AD), and severe AD. We analyzed the correlations in these different cognitive groups by the statistical methods. Whereas the CDR-SOB were not, the K-MMSE scores were fairly correlated with the Korean version of Boston naming test (K-BNT) and controlled oral word association test (COWAT, semantic and phonemic ward fluency) in all cognitive stages. Moreover, the neuropsychological tests correlated with K-MMSE scores was different among the 4 cognitive groups. The K-MMSE scores were better correlated with the other neuropsychological tests than the CDR-SOB in dementia staging.
